The 3F Scale: A New Way to Answer, “How Are You?”

The 3F Daily 'Where Am I At' Scale helps me gauge my emotional state and respond more authentically when asked how I'm doing.

We’ve all been there. Someone asks, “How are you today?” and we’re unsure how to respond. Sometimes, this seemingly simple question can be surprisingly difficult to answer. I found this especially challenging in early 2020, shortly after losing my husband and a close friend, all while navigating the beginning of a global pandemic.

These experiences led me to develop the 3F Daily ‘Where Am I At’ Scale. This tool has helped me gauge my emotional state and respond more authentically when asked how I’m doing. Let me share it with you.

The 3F Scale: Floundering, Functioning, Flourishing

Floundering (-5)

This is how you feel on your worst days. You struggle to perform basic tasks and are unaware of your surroundings.

Functioning (0)

This represents your average days. You can manage day-to-day activities, but they might be challenging, and you have limited energy afterwards.

Flourishing (+5)

You’re thriving on these days. Tasks are easy, you have extra energy, and you can fully enjoy your surroundings.

Using the 3F Scale

To use this scale effectively, consider asking yourself these questions based on where you fall:

Floundering:

– Can I cope alone?

– Do I need to ask for help?

– What sort of help do I need?

– Who can help me?

– What do I feel I cannot do today?

Functioning:

– What might I like to do today?

– How can I nurture or improve my current state?

– Who do I want to connect with?

– How much connection can I manage?

Flourishing:

– How can I maintain or improve my current state?

– What has enabled me to flourish?

– How can I savour this state most effectively?

– How would I like to connect with others to enjoy this state?

Why It Matters

Understanding where you are on any given day allows you to be realistic about what you can handle. It’s not just about answering others; it’s about checking in with yourself throughout the day. This self-awareness is crucial for your well-being, helping you make informed decisions about your activities, interactions, and self-care.
