Finding Your Voice: Embracing Failure and Understanding Control

Finding Your Voice: Embracing Failure and Understanding Control by Dr Carol McGowan. Life strategist and Master Coach

In our journey through life, the importance of having a voice cannot be overstated. Yet, as we age, many of us find it increasingly challenging to express ourselves and assert our needs. This struggle can stem from various factors, including a lack of self-confidence, awareness, or clarity, as well as external circumstances that may inhibit our ability to speak up.

At Strategic Achievement Coaching, we believe that understanding the concepts of self-advocacy and self-agency is crucial. It’s about recognising your right to ask for what you need and having the courage to do so. The question we often face is: What will you regret more? Not asking and living with uncertainty, or asking and potentially receiving an answer that isn’t what you hoped for? The latter at least provides clarity and direction for your next steps.

Using your voice can be a powerful tool for personal growth, but it’s essential to remember that the journey may not always go as planned. Embracing the possibility of failure is part of the process. Here are some guiding principles to keep in mind:

Stay Open to Opportunities: Life is full of unexpected turns. Embrace them.

Reframe Failure: Instead of viewing failure as a setback, see it as an opportunity to gain new perspectives and insights.

Avoid Self-Restriction: Don’t box yourself in with limiting beliefs. You are capable of more than you think.

Take Risks: Don’t let fear dictate your actions. Be willing to step outside your comfort zone.

Seek Support: Surround yourself with a supportive network that encourages your growth.

As you navigate the complexities of life, it’s vital to acknowledge your successes, learn from unexpected outcomes, and maintain a compassionate relationship with yourself. Remember, every failure carries a silver lining, and asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Understanding what you can control versus what you cannot is another critical aspect of this journey. By focusing on your sphere of influence, you can channel your energy into areas where you can make a difference.
