The Ladder of Ableness for Coaching

You want to be coached, but are you able to be coached?

In previous weeks, we have discussed the wheel of readiness for coaching and the house of willingness for coaching. Now, we will discuss the last component of the Coaching Readiness Framework, the Ladder of Ableness for Coaching.

There are four rungs in the ladder:

Rung 1 – Able to act on your behalf

Sometimes, you can assign someone else to act on your behalf, e.g., power of attorney. However, when it comes to coaching, this is not something you can delegate to someone else. This is something you need to take full responsibility for. So, are you ready and willing to act on your own behalf? Are you willing to do all that it takes, without restrictions, to enable you to make the desired change? If not, what needs to change that would put you in a position to make your desired change?

Rung 2 – Skills to make the change

For any change to occur, we need specific skills to draw on. These skills include strong self-discipline, self-leadership abilities, well-developed self-awareness, self-efficacy, and a strong self-perception. There are others, but these are some of the more significant ones that will help you make your desired changes. Do you think you have the requisite skills in place or can develop them to enable you to make your desired change? If not, what might you need to do to help enhance your skills to a suitable level that will better position you for meeting the ableness of the coaching component of your readiness?

Rung 3 – Finances and other Reserves

For coaching to occur, it will most likely require a financial investment to enable you to hire a coach. Are you in a position where this is possible? There are other reserves you might need as well. One thing that you might not automatically consider is thinking about time. Coaching will challenge your thinking, and you may need time to ponder what comes up. This is not a luxury but a necessity if you are going to make the most of your coaching experience. Others could be time to complete exercises, finances to do assessments, and the ability to connect with others in meaningful ways, to name a few.

So, how are you regarding the status of your finances and other reserves? Do you think you have what you need? If not, what might you do to supplement your current situation and better position yourself for coaching?

Rung 4 – Flexibility in Life Schedule

We all have many activities going on in our lives. Typically, multiple factors make demands on our work, family, relationships, responsibilities, etc. Do you have the ability and flexibility to adjust your life schedule to accommodate coaching?

Does your current situation enable you to add coaching into the mix? If not, what might you need to change to accommodate the inclusion of coaching?

Having reviewed the rungs of the Ladder of Ableness for Coaching, how do you see yourself when it comes to being able to take on coaching?

I would love to hear in the comments whether you think you are well placed or whether you might need to make changes to make coaching a viable option for you.
